Support Meetings
Monthly support meetings are held on the last Monday of each month. Our meeting location is Parkdale Baptist Church at 474 Parkdale Ave.
Take the Parkdale exit off the Queensway and turn north onto Parkdale. Turn left at Tyndall (the church is on the corner of Parkdale and Tyndall). The parking lot is on the right, immediately behind the church. Click here to view a detailed, interactive map.
Our meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and finish by 8:30 to allow for time for questions and visiting. Children who can sit quietly may attend but please be sensitive to others by sitting near the back so you can slip out if you have a crying baby. We love children, but these meetings are like a "professional development day" for teachers so it is important that all can hear.
August 29: Back to school panel discussion and Q & A.
September 26: Come and meet the library ladies. Elizabeth Thornley, Coordinator, Children & Teen Services for the Ottawa Public Library will share with us the amazing resources available through the public library. Lynda Joanisse, RVHEA Librarian will dazzle us with the resources available to RVHEA members and also the wonderful programs she runs on Wednesdays at the RVHEA library.
October 31: Annual General Meeting - Review and bring your budget from the October newsletter. Come prepared to express your ideas and encouragement. Fran Parker from the National House of Prayer in Ottawa will tell us about their programs which are of interest to local homeschoolers. Sandy Poskus will be our featured speaker. This is how she describes her upcoming talk. "I have homeschooled my two sons right from the beginning. My younger son and I became involved with LEGO Robotics and we have entered a team in a few local competitions. My older son expressed a desire to be a carpenter. I thought 'how hard could that be?' Well it turns out that it has been a real challenge." Come and hear about their unique journey and gather some information to help you on your journey.
November 28: Are you challenged because you have a large family or are you concerned because you are teaching an only child? This is the meeting for you! Lynette Bloedow, who is teaching her son Daniel, will address "Teaching the 'Lonely Only': What's Normal Anyway?" Lynette hopes to be an encouragement and a blessing to those in attendance. She will be preparing this talk with son Daniel's and husband Tim's inputs. Robin Gilman, a mother of ten, has been enjoying homeschooling for 25 years. Her oldest six (ages 18 - 30) are presently making it in the "real world" - from missionary in Haiti, to radio broadcaster to Masters degree student. Robin is currently teaching the youngest four (ages 6 - 17). Robin's passion is encouraging other homeschooling parents, which she looks forward to doing on November 28.
